Keeping Your Garage Secure in the Summer

24/7 Garage Door Security

The summer is a great time of year to spend with family and friends. With the kids off from school it makes the summer the ideal time to relax by the pool, take vacations to the beach, and spend quality time together. However, spending so much time away from the home also makes it a peak time for home burglaries. So while attending those summer activities, it’s important to keep the safety of your home top of mind.

Many of these burglaries occur on the home’s first floor and one of the most vulnerable entry points, if not properly secured, is through the garage door. The garage is a place that many homeowners use as storage, which includes lawn mowers, tools, sports equipment, bikes, etc. Most of these things can be pretty expensive and a gold mine for thieves. While many homeowners spend tons on money on keeping their front door and windows secure they often neglect the garage door. Here’s some tips to keep your garage more secure.

summer security for garage and home

1. Keep Your Garage Door Closed

One of the easiest things you can do is to make a practice of always closing your garage door, especially if your garage door faces the street. People walking and driving by have a perfectly unobstructed view into your garage when left open. The garage door is typically the most used entry point to the home, so it opens and closes a lot throughout the day. In the summer months the garage door is typically used more often so make sure you do your best to keep it closed when you’re not using it to enter or exit.

2. Frosted Windows on Your Garage Door

Windows on a garage door add value and provide light to the interior when the garage is closed. To deter anyone from seeing what you have in your garage then you may want to get frosted windows. These windows are also called “privacy windows”.

3. Hide Garage Door Opening Devices

The first precaution in making sure your garage isn’t an easy target is removing or hiding all garage door opening devices from your vehicles. If a burglar breaks into your car and finds the opener remote, the security of your home could be compromised.

4. Lock it Up

If you have key access to your home, another precaution to prevent a break-in is to deadbolt the door from your garage to your home. You can also implement the slide lock on the inside of your garage door. By utilizing this feature, homeowners can render it nearly impossible for an unwelcome guest to use a coat hanger or other security breaching device to unlatch the safety mechanism and manually lift the garage door. These inside slide locks have the ability to be padlocked as well.

5. Lighting in and Around Your Garage

Many of our garage door openers have lighting that activates when the garage door opener is operating. Motion censored lighting outside of the garage can be a great deterrent if an intruder is approaching. But also garage door openers that light up when activated can discourage an intruder from continuing into the garage space. Make sure your lights work in and around your garage. If your light bulb has gone out make sure you replace it with a light bulb that’s made specifically for garage door openers.

6. Beef up the Security

If you’re planning to go on a summer family vacation, Overhead Door’s OHDAnywhere provides additional security for homeowners by giving them control over their garage door straight from their phone. The OHDAnywhere is a garage door device and app that allows you to control your garage door from anywhere using your phone. You can get alerts when your garage door is opening and also have the ability to see when it’s been open and when it’s been closed. The great thing about this device is the device is attached to the door itself so even if your garage door is opened manually it will monitor the movement. Do you have kids at home during the day while you’re at work? Your kids may be taking the bikes out for a ride or going to friends’ houses. The OHDAnywhere allows you to make sure they close the garage door when leaving the house. Also, if you don’t have a keypad, there’s no need to carry a garage door remote with them. They can simply go to the app and open the garage door from there.

We hope these tips give you peace-of-mind this summer season so you can focus on spending time with you family and friends.
